2. Safe Cycling Routes & Tips

Strasbourg has tons of dedicated cycle lanes, and many routes are separated from traffic. Here are some favorites:

Best Bike Routes:

  • Quai des Bateliers → Parc de l’Orangerie – super scenic ride along the river
  • Route des Forts – 85 km bike loop through green countryside & forts
  • Ill River banks – peaceful and perfect for relaxing rides
  • City center & Petite France – beautiful, but sometimes busy with tourists

Use apps like:

  • Geovelo (specialized cycling maps!)
  • Google Maps – bike mode
  • Strasbourg’s interactive bike map on the STRASApp

3. Rules of the Road (Yes, Bikes Too!)

Cycling in Strasbourg is easy, but there are rules of the road people respect carefully. If you want to avoid fees, and unconvenient experiences, here’s what you need to know:

DO:

  • Ride in bike lanes or on the right side of the road
  • Stop at red lights and respect traffic signs
  • Use hand signals when turning
  • Equip your bike with: bell, lights (front + back), and reflectors

DON’T:

  • Ride on sidewalks unless there’s a sign
  • Use your phone or headphones while biking
  • Forget lights at night – it’s required by law!

Helmets aren’t mandatory for adults, but strongly recommended!

Bonus Tips:

  • Lock your bike well (bike theft exists!) – use a U-lock, not just a cable
  • Check for bike repair stations around the city
  • Need help fixing your bike? Try La Maison du Vélo or a DIY workshop like CADR 67
