Renting in a new city is exciting, but also a bit risky if you don’t know the warning signs. Here’s how to stay smart and avoid getting scammed:
Red Flags to Watch For
1. Too Good to Be True?
- Super cheap rent in a prime location?
- Fancy furnished apartment that looks like a Pinterest board?
Be careful — scammers often use fake listings with gorgeous photos and low prices to get your attention.
2. No Visit Allowed
If the landlord says:
- “I’m abroad, can’t show the flat.”
- “Send the deposit first, then I’ll send the keys.”
Big no-no. Always visit the apartment in person, or send someone you trust if you’re not in Strasbourg yet.
3. Asks for Money Too Soon
Never send:
- A deposit
- Rent
- Or even copies of your ID
…before signing a proper rental contract (and ideally after visiting).
How to Stay Safe
1. Use Trusted Websites
Stick to well-known French platforms:
- Leboncoin.fr
- Seloger.com
- LocService
- PAP.fr
- Studapart (student housing)
- University housing boards or CROUS Strasbourg
Most scams happen on random Facebook groups or dodgy private listings.
2. Ask for Documents
A real landlord should provide:
- An official rental contract (bail)
- Their ID
- The diagnostic report (about energy, gas, etc.)
And you can ask to see proof that they own the apartment (an attestation de propriété).
3. Google Everything
Search:
- The address: Does it really exist?
- Their name/email/phone number: Are there scam reports?
- The photos: Right-click + “Search image on Google” to check if it’s stolen.
Smart Strasbourg Renter Checklist:
- Visit the flat
- Never pay before the contract
- Ask for legal docs
- Trust your instincts
- Use safe platforms
Still Unsure?
If something feels weird — ask! You can:
- Chat with a local student union
- Ask ADIL 67 Strasbourg for free legal advice: adil67.org
