Waste and Recycling in Strasbourg

Waste and recycling ins Strasbourg, official website in French: https://objectifz.strasbourg.eu/fiche/je-respecte-les-consignes-de-tri/

Here translated main features.

Since 1st January 2023, the Eurometropole of Strasbourg has implemented a new system which allows to sort and recycle basically any kind of packaging. From plastic bottles, to cans and milk cartons, you can recycle everything without hesitation. And if you still have any doubt, there is a research engine to tell you how to sort every item!

  • Yellow for ALL PLASTIC, METAL, CARDBOARD AND PAPER PACKAGING
  • Green for all kinds of GLASS
  • Blue for non-recyclable items

There are several complementary ways of sorting your bio-waste: local composting and/or separate collection at recycling bins. You must use disposable bags you can find on the market, or you can get them from the local council at one of the points on this map

Composting and Waste Collection – what’s the difference?

The Strasbourg Eurometropolis has implemented two food waste management solutions: composting and waste collection points. Composting has long been established in Alsace, and the city is committed to promoting and expanding it due to its environmental benefits and social impact. However, as of 1st January 2024, national regulations require all residents to sort food waste at the source.

To manage waste efficiently for 500,000 urban residents, the city introduced waste collection points in 2022.

Choosing Your Preferred Solution

1. Composting in Your Neighbourhood

Benefits:

  • Reduces food waste and improves soil quality
  • Strengthens community ties by engaging with neighbours
  • Provides insight into waste transformation

2. Using Nearby Waste Collection Points

Benefits:

  • A simple way to sort food waste
  • Keeps general rubbish bins cleaner (especially without meat waste)

3. Combining Both Solutions

Benefits:

  • Enjoy composting benefits while using collection points for waste that isn’t compostable

Key Considerations

  • Public Spending: Waste collection is managed by local authorities, while composting is mainly volunteer-led.
  • Environmental Impact: Composting reduces the need for waste collection lorries and lowers emissions.
  • Capacity: Collection points can handle larger waste volumes, whereas composting sites are smaller.
  • Types of Waste: Meat and animal-based waste require special processing and are often not accepted in community composting.
  • Community Bonding: Composting encourages social interactions in the neighbourhood.

Conclusion

The best option depends on individual preferences. Composting is ideal for those who want to actively participate in waste management, while collection points offer a practical alternative for urban areas. A combination of both can maximise benefits.

Some other ideas to reduce ecological impact:

  • recycling centres, local associations charities (many of the organisations in this guide need your donations)
  • your family, friends, colleagues, neighbours, etc.)
  • dedicated bins at waste collection centres
  • second-hand shops
  • dedicated online platforms (Tremma, L’Ill aux Soleils, Geev, donnons.org, jedonne.fr…)
  • Facebook groups (Sharing is Caring, Cherche, donne, échange…)

In some neighbourhoods, you will find a door-to-door system: this means that you will have to put outside of your accommodation your waste following the weekly calendar. Each zone is different, so you need to check out your days by searching for your city hall and then your address here. https://demarches.strasbourg.eu/proprete/jour-collecte-dechets/

Key info:

  • OM = ordures ménagères = non-disposable items (blue bin)
  • TRI= triage = recyclable items (yellow bin)

In some cases, you will have to take out on your own the TRI and the GLASS waste. For foodwaste, see the section about composting and collection bins.
